STEPS:

  • Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat the oven to 430°F. Allow your pastry sheets to thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes.

  • Prepare the Pastry:

    • Cut each rectangle sheet of puff pastry into 3-inch squares.

    • To create the traditional star shape, use a knife to make diagonal cuts in the corners of the squares towards the center of the tart, about halfway towards the center.

    • Lift every other split corner and pinch them down in the middle, pressing into the center with moistened fingers.

    • Place 1 teaspoon of homemade compote or store-bought marmalade in the center of each square. Repeat for all squares.

  • Arrange and Brush:

    • Transfer the prepared tarts to a parchment-lined baking sheet, placing them at least 1 inch apart.

    • Lightly brush the tops of the tarts with the egg wash (lightly beaten egg) or melted butter to moisten the corners.

  • Bake:

    • Bake the tarts for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

  • Cool and Garnish:

    • Allow the tarts to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.

    • Once cooled, dust the tarts lightly with powdered sugar.

    • Optionally, top the centers with an additional 1/2 teaspoon of compote or marmalade.

    • Enjoy your Joulutorttu!
